Rupal Bhansali is chief investment officer and portfolio manager of Ariel’s global equity strategies. In this capacity, she oversees our global research effort and manages multi-billion dollar portfolios. She also co-manages our global concentrated strategy. Rupal joined Ariel in 2011 after 10 years with MacKay Shields where she was senior managing director, portfolio manager and head of international equities. Previously, she spent 5 years at Oppenheimer Capital, where she was responsible for international and global equity portfolios and was promoted to co-head of international equities. Additionally, Rupal has held various roles at other financial services firms since she began her career in 1989, including Soros Fund Management. In 2009, Forbes International Investment Report named her a “Global Guru,” in 2015, Barron’s recognized her as a “Global Contrarian,” and in 2017 PBS’s Consuelo Mack referred to her as an “unconventional thinker.” In January 2019, Rupal became the newest member of the prestigious Barron’s Investment Roundtable, which showcases “10 of Wall Street’s smartest investors.” She is a frequent guest on Bloomberg, CNBC and Fox Business News, and authored the book, Non-Consensus Investing: Being Right When Everyone Else Is Wrong. In 2020, Rupal obtained the FSA credential, awarded by the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB) for professionals who understand the link between sustainability and financial performance. Rupal serves on the Advisory Board of Directors of the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership at Columbia Law School, and the Board of Directors of the 100 Women in Finance Global Association. Fluent in several Indian languages including Hindi, Rupal earned a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting and finance, as well as a Master of Commerce in international finance and banking from the University of Mumbai. She later earned an MBA in finance from the University of Rochester, where she was a Rotary Foundation Scholar.

Kevin leverages his 20 years of internet and software research experience to support our coverage of the global technology and industrials sectors. Prior to joining Ariel as a research associate in 2018, Kevin had worked at various Wall Street firms including Collins Stewart/Canaccord Genuity, AG Edwards and UBS/Paine Webber. Kevin earned a B.S. from Union College and an MBA from the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.

Barry became a member of Ariel’s global investment team in 2019 to focus on bottom-up, fundamental research in the financial services sector. With over 20 years of experience, he has been researching global financial companies at a variety of firms, including Knott Partners, Merrill Lynch, Glenview Capital and Maverick Capital. Barry received a BS and a BA in Finance and Accounting from Boston University.

Micky serves as co-portfolio manager of our global concentrated strategy, and covers the autos, health care, media and technology sectors as a research analyst. He is also the Head of Investments of the global equities team. In this capacity, he arranges retreats and teach-ins which hone the team’s critical and counterintuitive thinking capabilities, helping them serve as better “Devil’s Advocates” on our investment theses. He joined Ariel in 2011 after spending over 8 years as an equity research analyst at various investment firms, including Smith Jacobs and September Group Partners, where he focused on global absolute return strategies. Micky is a sought after speaker at investment conferences and a frequent guest on Bloomberg and CNBC. He is also widely quoted in trade publications such as Barron’s and Forbes. In 2020, Micky obtained the FSA credential, awarded by the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB) for professionals who understand the link between sustainability and financial performance. David Kwon

David assists with research in the utilities and basic resources sectors and transitioned from a consultant role to a research associate position in 2018. Before joining Ariel, he was an equity research vice president with SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. David also has previously held research positions at CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets / Credit Agricole Securities and Wachovia Capital Markets. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in finance from Baruch College/The City University of New York.
Kevin Mei

Kevin Mei is a research associate on Ariel’s global equities team assisting the team covering the autos and e-commerce sectors, as well as the Chinese market. A native in Mandarin, Kevin brings a decade of industry experience across the U.S., mainland China and Hong Kong. Previously, Kevin served as a research intern at Ariel. Before joining the firm, Kevin was an investment research analyst at Harper Capital Management. He held prior investment research roles at the Cayuga Fund within Cornell University’s endowment and William Blair Investment Management. Earlier in his career, Kevin served at Ford Motor Company as a financial analyst on the corporate development team. Kevin earned an MBA in Investment Research and Asset Management from Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business, an MS in Accounting from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, and a BBA in Economics from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China.
Brent Merlis

With more than 20 years of international trading and operations experience, Brent is responsible for executing Ariel’s global strategies. He joined the firm in 2011 after spending more than 10 years at Deutsche Bank Asset Management, most recently on the active equity trading desk. In this capacity, he implemented trades for both the domestic and international portfolios and collaborated with fund managers on best execution and risk mitigation. Prior to his tenure at Deutsche Bank, he started his career in the Bear Stearns management training program. Brent graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in political science.
Barney Rosen

Barney joined Ariel’s global investment team in 2019 to enhance our research effort by bringing expertise in the healthcare sector. Specifically, he has amassed over 20 years of experience researching global healthcare companies at buy-side firms such as Epoch, Axiom and GE Asset Management. Earlier in his career, after completing his medical residency at Washington Hospital Center, Barney joined the US Navy as a Medical Officer and was deployed in Japan. He received an MD from New York Medical College, an MBA in finance from Campbell University, and a BA in business administration from Franklin & Marshall College.
John Rowley

John works side by side with our global investment team, as both a client portfolio manager and research analyst in a generalist capacity. Prior to joining Ariel, John was a co-founder and portfolio manager at Coanjo Capital. This followed a successful career spanning 18 years at Oppenheimer Capital, most recently as a managing director. During his tenure there, he also served as a senior analyst and led the global technology investment team. John earned a BA in economics from Yale University and an MBA from the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania. John is also a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of New York.
Dong Zheng

Dong spent seven years as a fundamental equity research analyst with JO Hambro Capital Management and Harding Loevner Management before joining Ariel in 2017. Dong’s area of focus are the industrials and technology sectors. A CFA Charterholder, Dong earned a B.S. in electrical and computer engineering from Cornell University.
