Carlos E. Calderon

Chief Financial Officer
Carlos E. Calderon joined Ariel Investments in June 2021 to lead the Finance function for the firm. As Chief Financial Officer and a member of the firm’s Operating Committee, Carlos is responsible for the overall management of financial reporting, corporate development, planning and analysis, accounting, and capital management. He brings experience in strategic planning, decision support, financial systems, and building strong teams in the asset management industry. Prior to joining Ariel, Carlos served as Vice President and Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) at Eaton Vance, a subsidiary of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where he oversaw strategic planning, profitability, management reporting, and the initiative investment committee for the multi-affiliate asset management and brokerage business. In addition to FP&A, he managed mutual fund investment management reporting for both the Eaton Vance Management and Calvert Management fund boards. Prior to joining Eaton Vance, he held leadership roles at State Street Global Advisors and BNY Mellon supporting Global Investment Management, Global Product, Marketing, and Wealth Management. Carlos serves on the boards of various external affinity organizations, including the Junior Achievement of Northern New England Associate Board and City Year Seven Generations Board, and is a member of ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America). He is an active volunteer and supporter of Hope for Kasai, a non-profit bringing education to the youth of Kasai Oriental in Congo Africa. Carlos earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Corporate Finance from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Mareilé Bayard Cusack

Mareilé advises Ariel’s senior leadership, mutual fund board of trustees and company board of directors on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters regarding the investment adviser, investment company, broker-dealers, securities compliance, corporate and fund governance, and SEC and FINRA examinations. She serves as board secretary to the investment adviser, broker-dealer, Ariel Alternatives and Ariel Investment Trust. She is also the anti-money laundering officer for all four entities and chief privacy officer for Ariel Investments and Ariel Alternatives. Mareilé joined Ariel in 2007, bringing more than two decades of legal experience to the firm. Prior to Ariel, she worked at the Chicago Stock Exchange, where she held the positions of associate general counsel and chief enforcement counsel. Previously, she was the chief legal counsel for the Illinois Gaming Board and served as an attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission and two Chicago-based law firms. Outside of Ariel, Mareilé serves on the boards of The Lincoln Park Zoo, The Chicago Police Board and The Smart Museum. She graduated magna cum laude with a BA in European history and economics from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her JD degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Wendy D. Fox

Ariel’s compliance department is run by Wendy D. Fox. Wendy is a 16-year SEC veteran who has served as Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) for the firm and Ariel Distributors, LLC (ADL) since October 2004, and as CCO for Ariel Investment Trust (AIT) since January 2014 and as CCO for Ariel Alternatives LLC and Project Black Management Company, LLC since February 2021. As CCO for the firm, ADL, AIT, Ariel Alternatives and Project Black Management Company, Wendy manages the firm’s regulatory risk oversight as well as its investment advisory and broker-dealer compliance efforts and practices. Wendy works closely with all areas of the firm to assist in the enhancement of each department’s compliance procedures in addition to the firm’s interdepartmental procedures. Prior to Ariel, Wendy spent 16 years working for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s regional office in Chicago, where she was attorney-adviser for the Branch of Investment Management Examinations, ethics liaison officer and senior attorney for the Division of Enforcement. Beyond Ariel, Wendy sits on the board of directors of The ARK, a nonprofit organization providing free social and medical services to members of Chicago’s Jewish community. Wendy earned a BA in English literature from the University of Michigan and a JD from Washington University in St. Louis.

Marlo joined Ariel in 2020 to lead all facets of our human resources function and partner with senior management to enhance our employee experience. In this capacity, she develops and drives strategy related to executive coaching, talent acquisition and development, compensation and benefits, career development, talent retention, culture, equity and inclusion. Additionally, Marlo serves as Ariel’s Chief Diversity Officer and co-leader of the firm’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, a cross-functional group which ensures that DEI is integrated across all business lines at the firm. Marlo is committed to further enabling our people and organization to grow and thrive while continuing to deliver exceptional results for our clients. Previously, Marlo was Senior Director, Human Resources, North America for Groupon Inc., where she partnered with executive leadership to integrate comprehensive people strategies with business and organizational priorities. Before Groupon, Marlo served as Corporate Director of Human Resources and Staffing at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, providing strategic support for all aspects of talent acquisition, development, and engagement. Previously, Marlo also held senior human resources roles at OfficeMax, Inc. and MB Financial Bank. She is a member of the Human Resource Management Association of Chicago and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Outside of Ariel, Marlo is a mentor and fellow with the Chicago Urban League and Chicago Booth IMPACT! Leadership Program and a board member of The People’s Music School. Marlo graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BS in Marketing.
James R. Rooney

James R. Rooney, CPA

Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer, Ariel Investment Trust
Jim joined Ariel in 2015 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of fund administration, including fund accounting, auditing and custody. In his capacity as chief financial officer and treasurer for the funds, he works closely with the independent board of trustees to provide the fund complex data needed to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities. Prior to Ariel, Jim spent 8 years with Fidelity, first as assistant treasurer of the funds, and more recently as vice president of Fidelity Pricing and Cash Management Services, where he led the fund reporting group. With over 29 years in the financial services industry, he has also held leadership positions at Wellington Management Company, State Street and Chase Global Funds Services Company. Jim earned his BA in American civilization from Williams College and a master’s degree in accounting from Northeastern University in Boston. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Kenneth T. Slovin

Head of Global Operations and Technology
Ken is responsible for all aspects of international and domestic operations—including account and fund administration, accounting, trade settlements, performance reporting, middle office trade support and proxy voting—as well as overseeing firm-wide technology strategies. He joined Ariel in 2016 and sits on the firm’s Operating Committee. Previously, Ken served as director of investment operations at BMO Global Asset Management. Prior to that, Ken spent 25 years with Batterymarch Financial Management in Boston, where he started his career as an assistant portfolio manager and later rose to director of operations. Ken graduated cum laude with a BS in psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
