Phyllis F. Brady

Phyllis F. Brady

Human Capital and Public Affairs
Phyllis oversees human resources at Ariel. Additionally, she is responsible for all charitable, civic and political engagement and serves as the firm’s liaison to the Ariel Community Academy. Prior to joining Ariel in 2007, Phyllis worked at Ernst & Young, LLP in a variety of human resources positions, most recently as associate HR director and lead people consultant. During her tenure, she oversaw the HR functions of the Midwest and the Lake Michigan areas. She also worked in human resources at Arthur Andersen, concentrating on strategic planning, recruiting and retention policies, salary administration, and the performance review and promotion processes. Prior to her career in human resources, she spent eight years in the hotel and hospitality businesses. Beyond Ariel, Phyllis serves as a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, a member of the Ariel Community Academy Local School Council and a volunteer for the Center for Recreation and Family Training. Phyllis graduated from Millikin University with a BA in communications.

Mareilé Bayard Cusack

General Counsel
Mareilé advises Ariel’s senior leadership, mutual fund board of trustees and company board of directors on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters regarding the investment adviser, investment company, broker-dealers, securities compliance, corporate and fund governance, and SEC and FINRA examinations. She also acts as board secretary for the investment adviser, broker-dealer and Ariel Investment Trust. Mareilé joined Ariel in 2007, bringing more than two decades of legal experience to the firm. Most recently, she worked at the Chicago Stock Exchange, where she held the positions of associate general counsel and chief enforcement counsel. Previously, she was the chief legal counsel for the Illinois Gaming Board and served as an attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission and two Chicago-based law firms. Outside of Ariel, Mareilé serves on the boards of The Lincoln Park Zoo, The Great Books Foundation and The Smart Museum. She graduated magna cum laude with a BA in European history and economics from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her JD degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Wendy D. Fox

Wendy joined Ariel in 2004 as chief compliance officer of Ariel Investments, LLC and its affiliated broker-dealer, Ariel Distributors, LLC. In 2014, she was appointed chief compliance officer for Ariel Investment Trust. She is responsible for regulatory risk oversight and administration of compliance programs covering the investment adviser, broker-dealer and mutual funds. Wendy works closely with senior management, the firm’s external corporate directors and Ariel Investment Trust’s independent trustees, advising on compliance matters and managing regulatory examinations. Prior to Ariel, Wendy spent 16 years working for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s regional office in Chicago, where she was attorney-adviser for the Branch of Investment Management Examinations, ethics liaison officer and senior attorney for the Division of Enforcement. Beyond Ariel, Wendy is chairman of the board of The ARK, a nonprofit organization providing free social and medical services to members of Chicago’s Jewish community. Wendy earned a BA in English literature from the University of Michigan and a JD from Washington University in St. Louis.
Khoa Ho

Khoa X. Ho

Vice President, Investor Services
Khoa is responsible for the investor experience of Ariel’s mutual fund shareholders. In this capacity, he oversees a group of licensed professionals at our transfer agency who are dedicated to providing exceptional customer service. Khoa is also an Ariel spokesperson for financial literacy, frequently speaking in the community about “Investing 101” to educate the public on the fundamentals of mutual fund investing. Prior to joining the firm in 2001, Khoa worked at Goldman Sachs as an account analyst and in the marketing department at The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He serves as chairman of Heartland Alliance Health, a nonprofit organization providing affordable, high-quality health care for low-income, homeless, immigrant, and refugee populations throughout the Chicago region. Khoa graduated from the University of Chicago with a BA in biology.

David manages all aspects of Ariel’s information technology infrastructure. In this capacity, he oversees the firm’s technology team, as well as IT vendor relationships. David has more than 23 years of experience working in the financial industry, both in technology and operations as well as a financial/business analyst. Most recently, he was director of engagements for Adeptyx, Inc. and before that, head of IT for AshmoreEMM, LLC. Prior to this, David held a variety of project/IT management roles at Harris Associates, LLP, Nuveen Investments, Inc., DST Systems and DST International, U.K. David earned a BS in Journalism and Economics and an MBA from the University of Kansas. He is a University of Hong Kong Rotary Scholar.
Maureen Longoria, CPA

Maureen Longoria, CPA

Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer
Maureen coordinates and executes the financial activities of the firm. She oversees financial reporting and accounting, annual external audits, tax preparation, and regulatory reporting requirements. Maureen also manages the firm’s annual budget process. She previously held the position of controller and continues to provide senior management with quarterly financial forecasts, variance reports and financial statements. Prior to joining the firm in 2005, Maureen spent five years in the audit group of CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C., an independent certified public accounting firm. She graduated with a BS in accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a Certified Public Accountant.
J. Paul Lussow

J. Paul Lussow

Chief Operating Officer
Paul oversees finance, human capital, operations and information technology at Ariel and assists with overall firm strategy. He joined Ariel in 2019 after serving as an operating partner at Sterling Partners, a middle market private equity firm, and spending six years with Laureate Education, Inc., a leading international network of quality and innovative institutions of higher education. At Laureate, Paul held a variety of senior roles including president of Kendall College, senior vice president of strategy and operations for Laureate Europe, and vice president for strategic initiatives, where he served as chief of staff to the founder, chairman and CEO. His prior experience also includes working as a director in investment banking at Credit Suisse and as a management consultant in Deloitte Consulting’s strategy and operations practice. He graduated with a BA in History from Northwestern University and earned an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
James R. Rooney

James R. Rooney, CPA

Senior Vice President, Fund Administration
Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer, Ariel Investment Trust
Jim joined Ariel in 2015 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of fund administration, including fund accounting, auditing and custody. In his capacity as chief financial officer and treasurer for the funds, he works closely with the independent board of trustees to provide the fund complex data needed to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities. Prior to Ariel, Jim spent 8 years with Fidelity, first as assistant treasurer of the funds, and more recently as vice president of Fidelity Pricing and Cash Management Services, where he led the fund reporting group. With over 29 years in the financial services industry, he has also held leadership positions at Wellington Management Company, State Street and Chase Global Funds Services Company. Jim earned his BA in American civilization from Williams College and a master’s degree in accounting from Northeastern University in Boston. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Kenneth T. Slovin

Director of Global Operations
Ken is responsible for all aspects of international and domestic operations from account administration, trade support, reconciliation, account performance, and composite reporting, to proxy voting and corporate actions. He joined Ariel in 2016 after serving as director of investment operations at BMO Global Asset Management. Prior to that, Ken spent 25 years with Batterymarch Financial Management in Boston, where he started his career as an assistant portfolio manager and later rose to director of operations. Ken graduated cum laude with a BS in psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
