As we enter 2012, we would like to introduce you to some of our newest Ariel teammates. While some might question our investment in more talent when the stock market is so volatile, it should come as no surprise given our contrarian approach to managing our portfolios as well as our firm. When the 2008 – 2009 financial crisis presented us with great stock opportunities, we seized them. We are doing so now with people. We have always managed our firm conservatively in order to have the financial flexibility to take advantage of such occasions as they arise.
As you may recall, simultaneous with the ‘09 market bottom, we hired David Maley who brought with him a simpatico micro-cap value strategy as well as an outstanding track record. Then, as the European debt debacle unfolded last Fall, we hired Rupal Bhansali from MacKay Shields where she had amassed an exceptional international track record over a 10-year period. At year end, we enthusiastically launched Ariel International Equity and Ariel Global Equity portfolios under Rupal’s lead as Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of International Equities. We are delighted to have Rupal managing an expanded Ariel line-up while also sharing her deep knowledge of global markets at a time when the world is more interconnected than ever.
Before we introduce you to the rest of our New York-based international and global team, we have one significant addition in Chicago. More specifically, we are pleased to announce Daniel W. Hynes is joining Ariel as a Senior Vice President aiding in our client services and marketing efforts. As many know, Dan recently ran for Governor of the State of Illinois, having successfully served three terms as State Comptroller from 1999 through 2011. Dan has always been a top performer as evidenced by his distinguished public service record as well as the fact that he had the distinction of being our state’s youngest constitutional officer since World War II when first elected. In addition to his successful tenure as Chief Fiscal Officer of the state, Dan served as Chairman of the State Employees’ Retirement System as well as a trustee of the Illinois State Board of Investment. Since leaving government, Dan has worked as a principal at Foster & Foster Actuaries & Consultants, Inc. representing public, non-profit and Taft-Hartley clients. Having served as a hands-on fiduciary, Dan comes to Ariel with unique industry experience that adds a rich, nuanced perspective to our efforts that should enable an already strong marketing team to service our clients even better. Dan graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in economics and earned a J.D. with honors from Loyola University School of Law. On a personal note, I have been privileged to know Dan since our high school days together at St. Ignatius College Prep. Over the years, we have maintained strong and consistent contact and I could not be happier to welcome a good friend to our Ariel family.
