Rupal is the portfolio manager for Ariel’s international and global strategies and oversees the entire research effort for these offerings. Additionally, she covers the financial services and retail sectors. Rupal joined Ariel in 2011 after spending 10 years with MacKay Shields, where she was senior managing director, portfolio manager and head of international equities. During her tenure, Rupal successfully managed both institutional and retail portfolios. Prior to joining MacKay Shields, Rupal was portfolio manager and co-head of international equities at Oppenheimer Capital, where she co-managed international and global equity portfolios. She has also held various roles at other investment firms since she began her career in 1989, including Soros Fund Management. Fluent in several Indian languages including Hindi, Rupal earned a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting and finance, as well as a Master of Commerce in international finance and banking from the University of Mumbai. She later earned an MBA in finance from the University of Rochester, where she was a Rotary Foundation Scholar.

Karthic Arunachalam, CFA®

Vice President, Research
Karthic focuses globally on the basic resources and consumer discretionary sectors. Prior to joining the firm in 2013, he served as a senior research associate for UBS India Services in Mumbai and Hyderabad. He was previously a senior analyst in the investment research division of Evalueserve in Gurgaon. Karthic is co-founder of the Right to Education movement of Child Rights and You in Chennai, India. Fluent in Tamil, he graduated from Anna University’s College of Engineering and earned his MBA from the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Micky Jagirdar

Vice President, Research
Micky focuses globally on the technology and health care sectors as a research analyst. He joined Ariel in 2011 after spending nearly 10 years as an equity research analyst at various investment firms, including Smith Jacobs and September Group Partners, where he focused on global absolute return strategies. Fluent in several Indian languages including Hindi, Micky earned a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting and finance from the University of Mumbai and an MBA in finance and investments from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College.

Guotao Lu

Vice President, Research
Guotao focuses globally on the telecommunications and industrial areas as a research analyst. Guotao joined Ariel in 2011 with more than 10 years of experience. His previous four years were with MacKay Shields as an equity analyst covering industrials, financials and technology. Additionally, he has more than five years of experience as a software engineer. Fluent in Mandarin, Guotao graduated from Tsinghua University with an MS and BE in computer science. He also earned an MS in computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MBA from Columbia University (N.Y.).

Brent Merlis

Vice President, Head Trader
International Equities
With more than 14 years of international trading and operations experience, Brent is responsible for executing Ariel’s international and global strategies. He joined the firm in 2011 after spending more than 10 years at Deutsche Bank Asset Management, most recently as an assistant vice president of active equity trading. In this capacity, Brent implemented trades for both the domestic and international portfolios and collaborated with fund managers on best execution and limiting risk. Brent graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in political science with concentrations in finance, psychology and biology.

Chaim Schneider, CFA®

Vice President, Research
Chaim focuses globally on consumer staples and financials as a research analyst. When he joined the firm in 2012, Chaim had more than a decade of research experience having previously worked for Deloitte LLP, MacKay Shields and Citigroup. As an active member in his community, he cofounded Nefesh Yehudi Academy, a unique after-school program in New Jersey. Chaim graduated magna cum laude from Yeshiva University in New York with a BS in accounting and information systems, and earned his MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Jeffrey H. Suzuki

Research Analyst
Jeff focuses globally on the leisure, entertainment and utilities areas. With more than seven years of experience, he has worked in financial centers around the world from London to Hong Kong and is conversant in Japanese. Before joining Ariel in 2011, he spent three years at Northern Trust Global Investments on the international equities team. Prior to that, Jeff worked at Prime International Trading, Ltd. where he conducted extensive financial modeling and risk analysis. He earned a BS in finance and leadership from the University of Dayton and an MBA from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
