Sometimes understanding the investment industry can seem overwhelming. However, there are several simple steps everyone can take to begin.

It's best to start with the basics — read the business section of the newspaper or pick up a financial magazine to become familiar with general investment lingo and underline words you don't know. Watch the news or listen to the radio and pay extra attention to the business report. Again, note what you were interested in, but didn't quite understand.

Then take a few minutes out of your day to study. There are great websites that can provide a thorough overview of the financial industry. Additionally, there are educational books available with the specific goal of introducing basic investment concepts. Lastly, you can always ask for help! There are many financial institutions that have teams of professionals waiting to answer your investment questions. So don't be shy to pick up the phone.

Remember, the more you know, the better you will be equipped to take control of your financial future.
